Bonhams has a number of extraordinary lots on offer in its spring sale, pushed to 12 May this year. One particularly notable historical piece on offer is a fine and very rare 12-bore side-opening over-and-under round-action ejector gun by J Dickson & Son – the first of only four ever made. The gun was completed in 1888 for diplomat and statesman Schomberg Kerr, ninth Marquess of Lothian. Kerr’s career led him to the heights of Secretary of State, Keeper of the Privy Seal and Great Seal of Scotland, and head of the Scotland Office in Lord Salisbury’s Conservative administration. He was elected Rector of the University of Edinburgh and created Knight of the Thistle and Knight of Grace of the Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem, (formerly the medieval Knights of Malta, the Knights Hospitaller). The gun incorporates Dickson & Son’s patent number 215 sidelever-opening treble-grip action-body, highly-figured stock and scroll engraving, and is estimated at £25,000-£35,000.
